Hilo Farmers Market - Hilo, Hawaii

Hilo Farmers Market, located on the corner of Mamo Street and Kamehameha Avenue in historic downtown Hilo, is a must see.  Voted one of the best farmers markets on the west, Hilo Farmers Market offers fresh fruits, vegetables, exotic flowers, and other natural gifts and products.

Hilo Farmers Market is quite small, but has a lot to offer. I love locally grown, organic, natural products, so it was the perfect place to visit.  The best times to visit are Wednesdays and Saturdays, but they are open throughout the week too.

After buying far too much, my bag got so heavy, it was about to rip.  The fruits and vegetables were very fresh, so I couldn't resist.  If I could have carried more, I would have bought some of their bright red tomatoes too.  It reminded me of the sweet, red tomatoes I used to eat in Japan.

While we were at the Hilo Farmers Market, I noticed a variety of fruit jams and jellies.  As I looked at the labels for interesting items, a young woman came up to me and asked, "Would you like to try a sample?" After trying several samples, I decided to buy the Passion Fruit Ginger Jam.  It had an interesting flavor.

Later, as I strolled the market, I also noticed several other items that caught my attention.  There were vendors selling natural honeys.  According to the vendor, depending on the flavor and the season the honey is harvested, each will have a unique taste and quality.

I also bought Japanese cucumbers, lychee, and green mangoes.  Then, came the flowers ... the beautiful flowers!

When I first saw the flowers at the Hilo Farmers Market, I thought of my mom and the old lady next door.  Never did I imagine how meaningful they would be, especially to my neighbor who couldn't stop thanking me for the flowers she received.  She already thanked me profusely 4 times since Sunday and hasn't been able to stop talking about the flowers, which makes me feel happy knowing how much it meant to her.  I'm so glad she likes the antheriums!

Last night, my neighbor knocked on my door, requesting to buy me dinner because of the flowers she received. Even though I kindly let her know that she didn't need to buy me anything, she insisted and said "No, I want to buy you dinner" and would not budge.  I was shocked by her gratitude.  It feels nice to do good deeds for people, knowing how happy it makes them feel. My mom also loved the flowers, so I was more than happy.

If you are in Hilo, stop by the Hilo Farmers Market. It's a great place to pick up gifts for friends and family.

  1. Wow what a nice farmers market. That honey seems interesting. Actually I learned that honey is actually rather abundant in the island and serves as a good natural alternative to sugars, which makes it an excellent sustainable good. You're so kind with the flowers. You have indeed gained Kharma. :)
