<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After visiting Osaka a few times, I can now say that I love this vibrant, lively city. At first, I had my doubts because the first three times I visited, strange and unusual incidents happened to me, but these days I enjoy Osaka so much that I've visited it more than any other place.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One place I would recommend is Dohtonbori. There are a lot of shops and places to eat here. It gets very crowded at night, as the lights come on and the people come out to enjoy eating some of Osaka's most famous foods, such as takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and horumon.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSngUejtouaaBVE6YfP1to3gyypOFiU6NlCyzTvU8LN44kAL02xgxl_5MN6RMhyphenhyphenlGcMZsRaEP86r8nbUmPJLkqbei8vdaRjBlpYSnS5f1aTfVq3u0n2W8AeIxVvCLxYHhAJ1oyN5sECGkc/s1600/20120524_205243.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSngUejtouaaBVE6YfP1to3gyypOFiU6NlCyzTvU8LN44kAL02xgxl_5MN6RMhyphenhyphenlGcMZsRaEP86r8nbUmPJLkqbei8vdaRjBlpYSnS5f1aTfVq3u0n2W8AeIxVvCLxYHhAJ1oyN5sECGkc/s320/20120524_205243.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I've never actually had horumon (intestines) but I loved this "family photo" in front of the restaurant. It's so Japanese.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd0YpFSOZJ51l_Ykae_XERQnFxXTGjXY2z9AV09Sa9XQuEL7Ffz4lGtEkd4VpvyljKwPU8R-pcjb73iAzdWv3YbqWtdoMWLeaCO8HrW0WWSoGKblF_-BIuLXZ7KqH6VfjMFnnGqRKfky6E/s1600/20120524_205404.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd0YpFSOZJ51l_Ykae_XERQnFxXTGjXY2z9AV09Sa9XQuEL7Ffz4lGtEkd4VpvyljKwPU8R-pcjb73iAzdWv3YbqWtdoMWLeaCO8HrW0WWSoGKblF_-BIuLXZ7KqH6VfjMFnnGqRKfky6E/s320/20120524_205404.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is one of the best views of Dohtonbori. On the right, the lighted Buddha figure on the building might have you scratching your head, but this is actually Don Quijote, a cheap department store with all sorts of goods. If you plan on buying souvenirs, this is a great place to get them from...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixfDsfH4_3JYCnoCEYUeUavJPSigfapqWaKdzNQq4Xia9lEXma9-cm1YzjUJ993-7q0Ve1Sw61VxZyRU6K5UbGU9_fWmJdLNfHpCM70zz211fL9D0v9UVHpRkmGByy70RtJuKaVM4jvZgS/s1600/20120524_205515.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixfDsfH4_3JYCnoCEYUeUavJPSigfapqWaKdzNQq4Xia9lEXma9-cm1YzjUJ993-7q0Ve1Sw61VxZyRU6K5UbGU9_fWmJdLNfHpCM70zz211fL9D0v9UVHpRkmGByy70RtJuKaVM4jvZgS/s320/20120524_205515.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Also, if you want to see the area by boat, there's one that takes you right down the river. I wanted to ride the boat, but I missed out due to a number of "unusual" incidents. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL99_aGs0_yCDJlDnXWpQY6o_K_b75FEBtNZMfDHG1Evk0PnVM60AWevw7iYaQF28S2ejD4Epuo6MvnwgIrwwTZ6Y3YXiHf2nijQmB_hJhEa2au8e5xed8BKXPDnAl4limr5olo-MqCgVf/s1600/20120524_205459.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL99_aGs0_yCDJlDnXWpQY6o_K_b75FEBtNZMfDHG1Evk0PnVM60AWevw7iYaQF28S2ejD4Epuo6MvnwgIrwwTZ6Y3YXiHf2nijQmB_hJhEa2au8e5xed8BKXPDnAl4limr5olo-MqCgVf/s320/20120524_205459.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
While walking, you may come across a number of takoyaki restaurants. Why not try one?<br />
<br />
It's made of balls of dough stuffed with pieces of octopus. It's usually topped with onion, bonito flakes, and some mayo, while it's covered in a sauce. It's really good and has a light, simple flavor.<br />
<br />
Just watch out though. It can be very hot, so don't burn yourself. It's a challenge to eat takoyaki since you are given a toothpick, but it's worth every bite. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
While walking, you may see a ton of other restaurants with interesting decorations and displays. It's fun to take pictures around the area because there are so many eye-catching displays.<br />

The side streets of Dohtonbori also have a lot to offer. If you find the Turkish ice cream shop, you'll love the antics they play before you get your ice cream. It's hilarious to watch. <br />

<br />
The first time I ate at Hamazushi, a chain sushi restaurant near my apartment, I was confused about how to order my food. <br />
<br />
When you first enter the restaurant, you have to punch in how many people are in your party and if you'd like to sit at a table or a counter. A receipt prints out and you wait until your number is called in Japanese. For those who don't speak Japanese, this can be a complex chore.<br />
<br />
Next, once you are seated, it's time to order food from your personal digital menu. You can select what items you want and when it's ready, your sushi will come out on a special plate (high, black boat) with music playing to signal that it's approaching your table/counter on the conveyor belt. There are other items that are on the conveyor belt for anyone to grab, but the one's on the special plates are orders from the digital menu.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
When you need assistance from wait staff, you press the green button to the right and when you are ready to pay your bill, you press the yellow button below it.<br />
<br />
I wanted to let you know this because if you eat at one of these places, you might accidentally pick up someone's ordered food on the conveyor belt. I am sure it happens a lot since there are so many foreign students around here (like me!) who get confused for the first time. Thankfully, someone taught me how to do this beforehand, but I'm sure I would have picked one up if no one told me. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkVmsEKvqHP6uzZDogJIIPPlKAkG2HMeW0jXC_iap1MOik7Uvg3j-PBlRHgtllc4ua6JQ0pY7hw6b9qsEDA4Z_XKEWzBXvK8teh0pwOqSNRmmqNW9ufRreGsGG1zKMkjHRjqdeZp0y4YE7/s1600/2012-05-06+20.04.13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkVmsEKvqHP6uzZDogJIIPPlKAkG2HMeW0jXC_iap1MOik7Uvg3j-PBlRHgtllc4ua6JQ0pY7hw6b9qsEDA4Z_XKEWzBXvK8teh0pwOqSNRmmqNW9ufRreGsGG1zKMkjHRjqdeZp0y4YE7/s320/2012-05-06+20.04.13.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
They also offer green tea at Hamazushi. Grab a cub, add some green tea powder, and fill it with hot water from a faucet at your table. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTCmJnHRNOEieWjNEw8s6ORcLOzDspk5b2CPgLURRFFg7VGNsEqi13Lvz4WcIngTLM_LGUuy83p03HEaVhgigPj8_d5Qpr7Aq4ZEGJ3CXUgGzkHIhBC2k-rZdFvu4gZMtn48Y4t8-Y1MNO/s1600/2012-05-06+20.04.18.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTCmJnHRNOEieWjNEw8s6ORcLOzDspk5b2CPgLURRFFg7VGNsEqi13Lvz4WcIngTLM_LGUuy83p03HEaVhgigPj8_d5Qpr7Aq4ZEGJ3CXUgGzkHIhBC2k-rZdFvu4gZMtn48Y4t8-Y1MNO/s320/2012-05-06+20.04.18.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
While it may be a challenge to order food initially, the price to eat sushi is dirt cheap!<br />
<br />
A plate of sushi (two pieces) is 105 yen each. It's a little more than a dollar ...<br />
<br />
Today, I had 4 plates of sushi (420 yen) and a slice of milk crepe cake (210 yen). I ate for less than 1000 yen, which is great for a student budget.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fruit in Japan can be ridiculously expensive. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last summer in Hawaii, I ate 12 watermelons for less than a hundred dollars in total. In Japan, I have to pay approximately $4.00 for a slice at the supermarket. This is "average."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
However, I was SHOCKED by the price of a watermelon I saw in Osaka. Guess how much this watermelon cost? 9,450 yen which is over a hundred dollars!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am still wondering, "how do they determine a $10.00 watermelon from one that is $100.00?" At the supermarket this summer, the cheapest whole watermelon I've seen is a little over $10.00, but $100.00 is insane. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Watch out for prices when you buy fruit in Japan. Don't get mixed up with the numbers!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It was such a memorable day. I completely indulged myself in all of the Japanese street food which enticed me in every direction, while I saw an amazing festival at night that made me fear for my life.<br />
<br />
The main street was filled with food everywhere. While I am familiar with the more traditional Japanese street or festival food such as takoyaki, dango, and monjayaki, I discovered a new food - a french dog. <br />
<br />
A "French dog" is a humongous corn dog that could literally kill. I would be scared to eat it because it has sausage inside that is 10 times bigger than a hot dog! I was shocked. If only I had a picture ...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4Wifl1LYbjjQPJkrbQyE4qGC0mNT9aj3p6azDbcwJEN6GTCbarZB2QHU9QmiaiemgQOaeTYJtVERw9I8dwdY-lp_nk1zUAnTbnc_7hg7vRPt8Il8_f5Z5HcleltF8yDE5GvMaTvjWz17E/s1600/2012-04-08+17.17.15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4Wifl1LYbjjQPJkrbQyE4qGC0mNT9aj3p6azDbcwJEN6GTCbarZB2QHU9QmiaiemgQOaeTYJtVERw9I8dwdY-lp_nk1zUAnTbnc_7hg7vRPt8Il8_f5Z5HcleltF8yDE5GvMaTvjWz17E/s320/2012-04-08+17.17.15.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While some people may have enjoyed the French dogs, I love the more traditional Japanese food. I wanted to eat as much Japanese food as possible since I won't be here forever.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of my favorites is dango, which is made out of rice and seasoned to perfection. At least in my mind ... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
While I was enticed by the food, I'm sure these lovely masks made a lot of kids happy! I just love the bright color of these masks ... I can be really ADD at times.<br />
<br />

After passing the food-filled streets, I became mesmerized by the beauty of the cherry blossoms. Spring is a wonderful time to be in Japan!<br />

I approached the temple area, but unfortunately the castle had closed its gates, so we could not enter. I'm glad to have at least observed the beautiful temple area though and incredible view of the town.<br />

After exploring the temple, it was time to finally watch the show. It was the MOST amazing part of the festival, as I saw such incredible human strength as men moved the huge, festival structure below with all their might. <br />
<br />
When the men carrying the structure move it to turn it onto another street, it looks as if it will fall and crush you. I almost had a heart attack, but thankfully no one was injured that night.<br />
<br />
There were nearly ten of these structures that were featured and they were all decorated in a similar, yet different fashion. The lanterns were bright and swayed, while drums and music could be heard playing from inside. Believe it or not, there are people inside!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I only wish I went to more of these. If you visit Japan, please enjoy a festival while you are here because it adds to the cultural experience. And don't forget to try the street food!<br />

<br />
There's a small restaurant near my apartment that has amazing tonkatsu and it's extremely filling, especially if you order a "set." In Japan, if you order your meal as a set, you get a little more for your money. In my case, I paid an extra 315 yen for a bowl of rice (with radish leaves in it) and a parfait. Cabbage and soup also comes with your meal for free.<br />
<br />
I love the set concept because you only pay a little more for a whole lot more food. <br />

Kiyomizu Temple, one of my favorite places to visit in Kyoto, is a World Heritage Site located in Eastern Kyoto near the Gion area.<br />
<br />
Before reaching Kiyomizu, there's a beautiful village surrounding the temple. Although some streets are quiet, others are filled with crowds. There are a lot of shops and restaurants here selling traditional foods like green tea, tofu, and mochi.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
When finally reaching the temple area, the view is incredible. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF-3SEAVBwGLeC5_uML48k0cQQeECS3Ap1LfynXqcHk8jLqNwjvjdIOcMJPPym-eCtV8Z8FjdyvdJ_7FLZyoIoNn022j3p4ZijdD34BwPOEyW-6UEfARkEOhr789nm0Qqc26N3zd79ZYk/s1600/2012-04-22+14.08.04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF-3SEAVBwGLeC5_uML48k0cQQeECS3Ap1LfynXqcHk8jLqNwjvjdIOcMJPPym-eCtV8Z8FjdyvdJ_7FLZyoIoNn022j3p4ZijdD34BwPOEyW-6UEfARkEOhr789nm0Qqc26N3zd79ZYk/s320/2012-04-22+14.08.04.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Before entering Kiyomizu, people often "cleanse" themselves by pouring water on their hands with the provided ladles. You don't have to do this to enter the temple, but why not try it for the experience?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

There's also another shrine located at Kiyomizu. It's a temple for love. In the temple, there are two love stones inside. If you close your eyes and find your way to the other rock, you may find your true love. </div>

The three streams of water below is where Kiyomizu received its name. It means pure water. You can make wishes here.<br />

Kiyomizu is one of my favorite places in Kyoto! I love being here because it's beautiful and reminds me of a more traditional Japan. The air feels so fresh and natural here too.<br />

Hello everyone!<br />
<br />
It's been a while since I've written anything. I've been busy completing all of my papers for my final semester of graduate school.<br />
<br />
I have so much to share with you about my adventures in Japan. I've had a chance to visit Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, while I've lived in Nagoya for almost 5 months. It's been an amazing experience in Japan.<br />
<br />
It will be sad to leave, but I look forward to more wonderful experiences at my next destination - California.<br />
<br />
In the next two weeks, I will be squeezing in as much as possible. <br />
<br />
Here's a photo of a beach in Aichi from a mountain top. <br />

Takoyaki is a popular food in Osaka (and around Japan). It's gooey dough balls stuffed with pieces of octopus. <br />
<br />
I first thought I would enter the museum to learn more about Takoyaki, but I discovered that the Japanese use the word "museum" to also describe areas where there are a number of the shops and restaurants of the same type. <br />
<br />
The Takoyaki musuem was exactly that because it wasn't a museum, but a bunch of takoyaki restaurants and a Takoyaki gift shop.<br />
<br />
Of course, I like Takoyaki on the street the most, but the mochi and cheese Takoyaki was amazing at the Takoyaki Museum.<br />
<br />
Check it out if you have time and are in the area ...<br />

In Japan, I discovered "soup curry." I first had some in Tokyo and fell in love with this dish. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you visit Japan anytime soon, I'd recommend soup curry. I chose a chicken and vegetable curry which was amazing. Now, I've been trying to replicate soup curry at home, at least once a week, because I continue to crave the flavors of my first soup curry dish in Tokyo.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had it again in Nagoya and it was still just as amazing as I last remember.</div>

In Shibuya, there are a lot of great places to eat and shop. There are also heaps and heaps of people! It can get a little hectic at times. There are so many people that it can be difficult to walk, so watch out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The last time I went to Shibuya (last month), there were protests against nuclear energy in Japan. It was the biggest protest I've seen. It was interesting because protesters walked across one of Japan's busiest intersections to get their point across.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At the Shibuya crossing, you'll not only see masses of people walking across the intersection in every direction, but tons of foreigners taking pictures out of amazement. It's hard to believe how many people are around!</div>

If you like shopping, there are a lot of stores and shops. There's Forever 21, Zara, and Shibuya 109. My sister loves Shibuya 109. It has a lot of cute Japanese clothes, bags, and other goods. There's a men and women's 109 department store.<br />

My Japanese friend, a male, was surprised that I had been interested in visiting a maid cafe, but I never fully understood why. In my mind, a maid cafe was a fancy, theme-based coffee shop. <br />
<br />
On the streets of Akihabara, you may notice maids handing out flyers to potential customers - men. As a tourist, you may not notice that men are being targeted because there are barely any women around! However, a maid cafe is a man's world which I quickly learned upon stepping into one, as a female. It was an interesting experience.<br />

<br />
As a maid was walking by, I asked her about the cafe she was promoting. She quickly took us there and announced that there were two females entering the cafe - my sister and I. It immediately became awkward, as I stepped into a smoke-filled cafe with men because I felt I was disturbing their "home." It was a true sausage fest.<br />
<br />
Supposedly, maid cafes are for awkward, nerdy men who have difficulty with women. The mentality is that the customer (male) is the master and the maid is a subservient and obedient female that will cater to his needs. I can understand that maid cafes may appeal to these types of customers, but the men I noticed weren't all nerdy and did not fit this image. It seemed like a hang-out spot for all sorts of men, particularly younger ones.<br />

<br />
While I was in the cafe, we ordered some food: nachos and a chicken basket. We also ordered some drinks. One thing you should know is that people don't go to maid cafes for the food! It is the WORST food you'll probably eat, especially for the price. For the four of us, we paid about $74.00 USD for crummy food. The nachos were microwaved and tasted stale while the amount could fit into my palm. The chicken was also microwaved and soggy.<br />
<br />
Also, depending on how long you stay, you are charged. Some cafes will charge you every 15-30 minutes and others by the hour. It's not cheap either, so be prepared! Thank God we got out of there around 30 minutes, but I believe we got charged another $5.00 each just for being there a couple minutes longer (times that by four).<br />
<br />
I was shocked to see that one item cost nearly $380.00! Depending on what you order, the maid will "cast a spell" on your food (pretend, of course) or entertain you. I wasn't sure what this entertainment entailed until I noticed a maid do a child-like dance for a customer where she sang and rubbed a stuffed animal on a man's leg. I also saw a man being fed. It seemed like men would tell the maid to eat something they ordered too unless this was a part of the act. I'm really not sure, but it was unique.<br />
<br />
A maid cast a spell on my sister's drink, swirling her coffee with the words "make it good!"<br />
<br />
As a male, if you are into this type of thing, you may enjoy the attention of maids at a maid cafe. However, some of you may feel uncomfortable and uneasy, as you watch men being babied by maids in the most unusual ways while you sit awkwardly at your table eating the worst, most over-priced food - ever. It all depends on your perspective and your reason for being there.<br />

<br /></div>
Now that I have been to a maid cafe, I completely understand why my friend was shocked that I was curious about visiting one. It isn't the theme-based, upscale coffee shop that I imagined, but it plays on men's fantasies. As a woman, it was interesting to observe a maid cafe, but I think I'll check out another themed-based coffee shop, although I was happy to experience this one as an outsider. I think I will check out a cat-themed coffee shop next time!<br />

It took me nearly 3 hours to get to Osaka from Nagoya, but it was worth it. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The tickets at Universal Studios are quite pricey, so I made sure I made the most of my time there. Thankfully, the park was empty in the morning, so I had a chance to squeeze in a ton of rides without waiting too long.</div>

I love all of the 3D and 4D shows and rides. I nearly went on every single one. Spider Man, Back to the Future, and Shrek were memorable. Space Fantasy is also good unless you get motion sickness.<br />

In "Space Fantasy," you are on a mini-roller coaster that twists, turns, and spins. You have to store your bag in a locker because it will fly. Don't forget to remove any hair pieces too. </div>

My favorite ride is Jurassic Park. You feel as if you are on a dinosaur cruise until it drops below. If you are in the area, the "turkey bones" they sell at the kiosk outside of Jurassic Park are amazing.<br />

<br />
Many of you may be familiar with Harajuku, a place known for shopping and eccentric fashion. Gwen Stefani also popularized Harajuku through her brand, Harajuku lovers. <br />
<br />
When I first stepped out of Harajuku station, my image of the town had been shattered. Where were all of the costumes and the funky clothes? I felt I was walking through Rodeo Drive! I was on the wrong side of Harajuku ...<br />
<br />

A couple of streets over is what I was looking for ...<br />
<br />
This is where you will be able to find affordable, cute, funky, eccentric fashion. Just be warned that you will barely be able to walk because of all the people. It's a popular street!<br />

The crowds at Harajuku were insane, but I was able to find some cute clothes there! It can be tough to find some things because it takes some work, but it was worth the experience.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3501776795992974389.post-59260937396190096472012-05-02T06:55:00.003-07:002012-06-11T05:12:26.429-07:00The Hachiko Statue in Shibuya, Tokyo - Japan<div>
How many of you have heard of the film "Hachi," co-starring Richard Gere? The movie is based on a true story that took place in Japan during the 1920s. A Japanese version of the film had been created in the 1980s and had later been adapted into a Hollywood film in 2010.

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you visit Shibuya Station, you will notice a crowd of people always around the Hachiko statue. The statue represents an Akita dog, Hachiko, that used to wait for his owner every day, as he returned home from work. However, when the owner, a college professor, had died of a heart attack at work and had not returned to the station, Hachiko continued to wait until his return not knowing what had happened. Hachiko continued to wait for his owner for nearly ten years until passing away in the 1930s. A statue had been dedicated in Hachiko's honor and remains a symbol of true loyalty. </div>

Tokyo Tower reminds of the Japanese version of the Eiffel Tower, so it is an attraction that I wanted to revisit and take photos of as a keepsake. <br />
<br />
I didn't have a chance to go inside this time, but I have in the past. Inside the tower, there are a number of shops and restaurants. At the look out, there is a glass panel on the floor that will give you a view of the ground below. If you are afraid of heights, I wouldn't recommend looking down through the glass panel on the floor, but it is a good experience.<br />
<br />
If you are interested in visiting Tokyo, at the moment, entry into the tower is about 1,000 Yen. Tokyo Tower closes earlier in the evening though, so this may be more of a day activity or one in the late afternoon before 7 p.m. <br />

<br />
It's great news because I can now take a small breather to enjoy life a little this weekend. I really want to view the cherry blossoms in a beautiful location.<br />
<br />
Yesterday, I walked to school and noticed the sakura are starting to bloom. I'm glad they didn't all blow away in the crazy typhoon like conditions that hit Japan two days ago.<br />

I had no idea the winds were so strong. I came home from a party and could barely walk outside. I got drenched. I never realized how painful rain could be. <br />
<br />
If I had only known ...<br />
<br />
Thank goodness the weather is much better today.<br />

The sunsets in Japan are beautiful. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Every evening from my balcony, my room is lit up with red from the sun.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The weather is still cold outside though. I saw snow fall a couple of times, but as April approaches, the weather will start to get warmer and the cherry blossoms will soon bloom. </div>

I had to enjoy myself or else it might impair my ability to continue writing, so I decided to eat tonkatsu and shop at G.U. with J.<br />
<br />
After all, today is commencement (April 1st) for our school, so I was up early anyway. <br />
<br />
Everyone raves about tonkatsu in Japan. Here in Nagoya, miso katsu is famous, which is no different than tonkatsu except there's miso on it. The miso sauce they use tastes incredible ... <br />
<br />
I tried some miso katsu today (finally) and it was AMAZING! I had to wait an hour to eat at this place, but it was so worth it. I think this might be my new favorite place ...<br />

For 200 Yen more, I get a parfait with my meal. It had green tea ice cream, whip cream, cereal, a pocky stick, and some azuki beans in it.<br />
<br />
I can't believe how much food I ate though. I felt like I was going to explode. I didn't want to waste food though, so I decided I might as well eat whatever I could. Next time, I'll have to be the crazy foreigner who brings a Tupperware to save my food. </div>
<br />
In Osaka, J and I were starving, so we stopped into First Kitchen outside of the train station. It seemed convenient and the drinks looked good.<br />
<br />
I believe this is a chain found all over because I've seen it in other parts of Osaka. It's OKAY here. If you want something quick and cheap, try out the food, but don't expect anything spectacular.<br />
<br />
I ordered a tomato burger covered in ketchup (I love ketchup), while my strawberry smoothie was pretty good. However, the royal milk bubble tea tastes like iced milk, so I wouldn't recommend it.<br />

At Osu Kannon, there's a beautiful temple and streets filled with little Japanese shops, restaurants, and food vendors. <br />

I was surprised to find bubble tea!<br />

I thought I could return home from Osaka the day I arrived, but it never happened. I got stranded and ended up in a red light district, sleeping at Hotel Kinki. <br />
<br />
J and I were walking around aimlessly, navigating the streets of Osaka, looking for Takoyaki and dessert. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCNg7FMa7gIKEW2OLV2p2yE3A4PUvtQNJnuuWDt_qAQDLn7yC3tjeJlpguGqCqLCN35NOiL-dzfNjvcWUzDs5kEUG3U9tUH-IEavuClLsNjF6JOtedPsNiEFZMj-Voz6LTe9nO2_gP6lk/s1600/IMG_0999.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCNg7FMa7gIKEW2OLV2p2yE3A4PUvtQNJnuuWDt_qAQDLn7yC3tjeJlpguGqCqLCN35NOiL-dzfNjvcWUzDs5kEUG3U9tUH-IEavuClLsNjF6JOtedPsNiEFZMj-Voz6LTe9nO2_gP6lk/s320/IMG_0999.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4kZcnRu0Q2ht4-HbsClTcKD_BFMtORgmPlBG-0LlfhD4S30fOT6DIY-LMDcC-SmArrIB5jVzWUiIKQgZj4TXIv_yWZTJwzNZ0qWAibY1oeoG31OnTaQsDwzXxovmhD74ixixPGdoJjcU/s1600/IMG_1018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4kZcnRu0Q2ht4-HbsClTcKD_BFMtORgmPlBG-0LlfhD4S30fOT6DIY-LMDcC-SmArrIB5jVzWUiIKQgZj4TXIv_yWZTJwzNZ0qWAibY1oeoG31OnTaQsDwzXxovmhD74ixixPGdoJjcU/s320/IMG_1018.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As we were walking, things started to look a lot different. All of a sudden, there were girls holding signs like "Girl bar honey 500 Yen." There were girls in maid outfits and some REALLY scary looking men! <br />
<br />
As we walked by the area, we found Hotel Kinki. We were hesitant to stay because the area seemed really odd, but after inquiring about prices, Hotel Kinki offered the best rates. It was getting dark outside, so J and I decided to take a chance.<br />
<br />

<br />
The good news is that Hotel Kinki turned out to be a GREAT, budget hotel. In fact, I later discovered that it won an award for being one of the best budget hotels in 2012. There were a lot of your typical tourists there, visiting Osaka and taking advantage of the cheap hotel rates at the hotel. (I learned there are even cheaper hotels, but this one was a good find).<br />
<br />
It was clean, quiet, and hotel staff were also incredibly friendly and helpful! There's free WiFi and a computer in the lobby.<br />
<br />
Yes, it may be an odd area and it's not easy to find. The toilet area is also tiny. However, it is a deal ...<br />
<br />
There are tons of shops and restaurants in the area for you to enjoy until late too.<br />
<br />
I would definitely recommend Hotel Kinki.<br />
<br />
By the way, Kinki is a region in Japan!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3501776795992974389.post-63361855040242809902012-03-27T06:45:00.002-07:002012-03-27T06:48:59.720-07:00Hep Five Ferris Wheel - Osaka, JapanFor anyone who knows me, i'm terrified of heights. When a friend insisted we go on the Hep Five Ferris wheel, I feared for my life.<br />
<br />
She insisted we ride the Ferris wheel, which we spotted from a far. Little did she know what was in store ...<br />
<br />
I climbed into the moving Ferris wheel and sat, palms sweating and ready to pass out. The higher we went, I started to feel dizzy and caged inside of the tiny compartment. Crazy thoughts started to race in my mind, such as "what if there's an earthquake?" I started to freak my friend out, as I tried to calmly breathe ...<br />

As soon as we reached the top, it was the most exciting, thrilling, and awe-inspiring ride.<br />
<br />
Yes, it was slow and torturous heading up to the top, but it was also amazingly fun afterward. <br />
<br />
For 500 Yen, you can ride the Hep Five Ferris wheel in Osaka at the Hankyu Entertainment Park. The Ferris wheel is 160 meters high and is hard to miss. <br />
