"The Big Pencil" & the WWII Memorial - Washington, D.C.

"That's the big pencil!" my niece yelled as she pointed towards the Washington Monument.  The Washington Monument, according to Washington D.C, a book written by Tanya Lloyd, was "built to symbolize the power and elegance of George Washington."  The capstone itself weighs nearly 3,300 pounds, while the monument overlooks the city at 555 feet high (Lloyd, pg 30).  There's no way you'll miss it!

If you've ever watched the movie Forest Gump, the Washington Monument may bring back memories from the movie.  Look familiar?

Besides the Washington Monument, the World War II memorial honors those who served during WWII and is a tribute to those who sacrificd their lives for freedom.  Both, the Atlantic and Pacific theaters are featured, along with 56 pillars for every U.S. state and terroritory.  During the holiday season, wreaths are hung on each pillar.

In the summer, there's a fountain in the middle of the memorial.  If you plan to visit Washington D.C. in the summertime, a photo of the World War II Memorial would make for an amazing shot.

"Here We Mark the Price of Freedom"

When in Washington D.C., stop by the George Washington Monument and the World War II Memorial.  You won't regret it.
